Centacare takes the stage and the encore!

Centacare PHaMs Key Worker Brian Clarke presented at the recent Grampians Mental Health Conference.  Brian shared his experience of working with both aboriginal and non-aboriginal peoples who live in remote areas, experience isolation and who are affected by mental health issues.

Brian’s presentation featured a live interview of him that explored his work through a case study of one of his long term clients of aboriginal background.  It demonstrated how appropriate methods can support someone to become an inspiration to others who are battling life’s challenges and suffer a mental illness.

Demonstrating activities that he has developed, Brian spoke about establishing an art group where people gather to share time and experiences together, both through their art and in their conversations. He also spoke of the usefulness of the Yarning Mat, an actual mat where group participants are invited to sit around and tell their stories. In Brian’s work this has been such an effective tool for people to open up and to listen, providing participants with a social group they can relate to.

Brian’s work at Centacare’s Mildura office will continue to support both aboriginal and non-aboriginal members of the community who are suffering a mental illness.
